Doughnut Arrays (Math Craft)

Learn about multiplication arrays whilst creating your own box of doughnuts
It’s always so valuable to link math to real life whenever you can. It makes the math more relevant, more meaningful, and often more memorable too!
And so today, I have a math craft which introduces the concept of multiplication arrays with the help of…. doughnuts. Because really, who doesn’t love a doughnut?!
Children will create their own box of doughnuts, showing the doughnuts in the form of a multiplication array.

Tell me about this math craft
In this math craft, children will make a box of doughnuts. They will cut out a group of doughnuts arranged in a multiplication array of their choice.
There are two different levels of challenge. In the first version, children can cut out an array up to 3 x 5 to go in their doughnut box.
If they want more of a challenge, the other version (with smaller doughnuts) has enough doughnuts to make an array of up to 5 x 9.
In both versions of the printable, children can cut out any array they want from the doughnuts – you don’t have to use them all.
Under their doughnut array, children will write how many rows and columns their array has.
Then at the bottom of the sheet, there’s space to write the number sentence that matches the array.
How to make this doughnut array math craft
Print out the two pages of the craft (you can choose from two different levels of challenge).

If you want, colour the doughnuts and the doughnut box.
Next, take the page with the doughnut box on, and fold the top and bottom sections of the page into the middle, along the dotted lines.

Cut out the ‘Delicious Doughnuts’ label and glue this onto the top flap. Add your name too!

Cut out a multiplication array made from doughnuts and glue it into the box.
Again, there are two versions of the craft included so children can choose a simpler array (up to 3 x 5) or, they can choose an array made up of more doughnuts, but using the other sheet (arrays up to 5 x 9).

Under the array picture, write the number of rows and columns in the array. Write the matching number sentence too.

And with that, your doughnut arrays math craft is complete!

The finished doughnut arrays can be used as a useful reference as children continue with the topic of multiplication arrays. They look great on display too!
